Bank of New Zealand (BNZ)
McKee Fehl is proud to deliver its prestigious redevelopment of 96 The Terrace for Bank of New Zealand (BNZ)’s new home of their Technology and Digital Teams.
No ordinary office block, McKee Fehl worked closely with BNZ and their project team to deliver an agile and connected work space that surpasses client expectations and sets an industry benchmark for offices across Wellington.
The $10m redevelopment involved a seismic upgrade and a high-spec fitout which now boasts state-of-the-art amenities including a bar, café, dedicated wellness area, recreation room and A grade end-of-trip facilities.
Originally constructed in 1960 for Shell New Zealand, the centrally located headquarters accommodates approx. 900 employees across 10 office floors, plus two levels of plantrooms and a lower ground floor.
An innovative seismic strengthening approach was required to address the unique heritage building requirements and the highly technical specifications of the professional services client.
As part of their targeted approach, efforts to seismically upgrade the superstructure, services and the heritage listed façade were conducted separately. Seismic strengthening was achieved via shear wall thickening, façade bracing and restraint of the services, and the installation of a movement joints in the stairwells. Further refinements were made while strengthening the western building façade to meet fire regulations and accommodate inter-storey drift.
Setting an industry benchmark, this highly tailored workspace includes an impressive collection of features such as a public experience hub, a conference area and customer experience rooms. The premier reception welcomes guests into the prestigious building with an inviting café for colleagues and clients alike. The lower ground floor features a dedicated recreational space with pool tables, table tennis and bean bags to encourage staff sociability. Meanwhile, uniquely designed sleep pods allow employees to break-away from their busy work day to relax and recharge. The inclusion of A-grade end-of-trip facilities, including bike parks, showers and hair dryers, enable staff to participate in physical activities before, during and after work.
Upstairs, a modern and stylish open plan design provides a flexible working space that can be altered according to project and team needs. Every floor has individual and collaborative working areas, its own dedicated kitchen, breakout spaces and staff lockers. More formal meeting spaces have been provided on Level 7 with a dedicated commercial kitchen for private functions.
