Asteron Centre

We were pleased to have undertaken the seismic strengthening and interior refurbishment works on the Asteron Centre, which at the time of its opening in 2010, was Wellington’s largest single office building at 48,000m2!

This 15-storey premium-grade commercial building occupies a prominent corner position opposite the Wellington train station, and the main bus terminal.

This building had been home to the Inland Revenue, alongside various other tenants, until it was deemed unsafe in 2021 due to the aftermath of the Kaikoura earthquake and revision of new building standards.

As part of this high-profile project, McKee Fehl undertook the following works:

  • Hollow-core floor strengthening
  • Installation of a new concrete collar ring beam around the building core
  • Installation of steel plates on the roof and floors
  • Modifications to existing services to facilitate the new structural works
  • Reinstatement of the existing fitout after the restrengthening works have been completed.
  • Demolition of the existing BMU track.

This complex project sees the Asteron Centre strengthened to a minimum of 80% NBS.

Upon completion, the project delivered a structurally resilient and newly refurbished space for Inland Revenue, along with future tenants.
